  • The New Zealand harvesting area for Karengo has been closed by MPI indefinitely as a result of the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. We are now stocking Wild Karengo Fronds which are similar to NZ Karengo although darker and lighter/dryer. They are suitable for the same culinary applications and have very similar nutritional & therapeutic benefits.

    Wild Karengo is harvested sustainably by hand in South America, then dried naturally.

    Karengo is the NZ name for Nori and the Fronds are bite-size pieces suitable to a wide variety of culinary applications. These Wild Karengo fronds are easily eaten straight out of the bag, they are delicious just like that. They can be roasted gently to make them more crunchy and mixed with seeds & nuts for a nourishing snack. They are also delicious as a garnish for a variety of dishes and can add an anchovy-like flavour to Mediterranean dishes and sauces.

    There are a few varieties of Karengo around the world and they vary in colour, taste & texture. Maori have used Karengo as part of their traditional fare, especially in the winter when it comes into season.

    Karengo is rinsed in clean sea water to rid it of most debris then dried by the natural action of the sun and wind. It is then cleaned again by hand before packing.

    Karengo is extremely nutritious and is an excellent source of many valuable minerals and trace elements, vegetarian protein, vitamins A and B12, and essentials amino acids.
  • Karengo can be eaten as a nutritious snack straight out of the bag. Light roasting brings out a subtle nutty flavour.

    New Zealand based Pacific Harvest supplies fine seaweed which are made in small and high quality batches. Their types of seaweed from New Zealand include Karengo (NZ Nori) , Agar and Kelp. All of the sea vegetables are selected and hand-harvested by professionals that have made a career of harvesting seaweed. This process is undertaken in areas of New Zealand where nature has remained pristine and free of contaminants.
