The ancient Greeks called marjoram the joy of the mountains, and its oil still has that warm, comforting quality. Distilled from the leaves of Origanum majorana, a gentler relative of oregano, it is sweet, herbal and softly woody.

It is a lovely calming oil to diffuse in the evening, and in the kitchen it brings depth to soups, stews, roast vegetables and tomato sauces.
